Garmin nüvi 885T is worth the money
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I have had the Garmin nüvi 885T for a month and I had user initiated problems right out of the box. It wasn’t the 885T’s fault it was the users fault.
I connected the unit to my computer and it connected instantly. I went onto Garmin’s website and registered the unit and Garmin indicated that there was a firmware update. I downloaded the update and the 885T recognized it as an update and loaded the update to the gps.
Then the user screwed the pooch. I read the directions as after the gps finished the update disconnect from the computer and shut off the gps and then reconnect to the computer. Bad move that! It fried the gps. It had to be sent back for a replacement. To garmin for a replacement and back took 7 days.
My mistake was turning off the gps. You must let it complete the update before you turn it off and reconnect it to the computer.
There are some features that are not on the 885T that I have had in past Garmin’s but if you haven’t had past Garmin’s don’t worry about them. This is a good gps. The maps are typical for a gps. They are not exact but they get you close enough to find your destination. As stated I have had other garmin products so I have the maps loaded on my computer from them. You get no map disk with this unit. It is strictly a download from garmin. It doesn’t leave a mapsource file on your computer.
I have the mapsource program on my computer and loaded my saved waypoints with no problem. The waypoints are called favorites on the 885T. The voice recognition works flawlessly. I use the British Emily voice because I like the clear pronunciation. The British Daniel is also pleasant. The American Jill is a dud. I won’t repeat what my wife calls Jill.
Another reviewer stated that the 885T connected to satellites in his house. The unit I have did also. My computer room is on the deck with sliding glass doors which may have been a help.
From the time it is turned on until the unit is ready for navigation is 45 seconds. The distance to be navigated controls the amount of time it takes to calculate a route. No more than 15 seconds usually.
The points of interest are reasonably up to date and accurate. Once a route is calculated you can add via points to the route by picking a new destination while enroute. The unit will ask you if you want to set the new destination as a via point or a new destination. If you pick via point it will calculate a new route taking you to the via point and then onto your original destination. I didn’t have that feature on my other garmins and I really like it on this one. It definitely comes in handy on a trip.
The one thing about the voice commands that I don’t like is it takes too long to burrow down to a saved waypoint, er favorite on the 885T. But it is a small dislike. I think it could have been programed better. Maybe the next one.
I have been using this for a month and it works as advertised. It aquires satellites much faster than my other garmins and it calculates routes much faster. I didn’t sign up for MSN traffic because I thought it was another bell that wouldn’t work. If you run into traffic get the hell off the highway and use side roads. That is what a gps is for.
I don’t have the micro sd card yet but when I get it and use it I will update this review.
Would I buy this unit again. Absolutely!!!
